Yip Man // 'Braw Power' released this week!

The much anticipated debut album from Yip Man of Scotland, 'Braw Power' finally drops this week and you can BUY IT HERE! as well as at all the usual haunts (iTunes, Amazon, HMV etc). If you've got a local independent record shop near where you live then we'd recommend getting the album from them (ask them to get it in if they don't have it already!). It looks pretty swish even if we do say so ourselves.

Dork Magazine unveiled the latest song/video from the album, 'Barnburner', which once again sees Yip team up with the creative cats at Poppycock Films. Feast your eyes on it...

Thirty Pounds of Bone // 'Still Every Year They Went' New Album with Philip Reeder

On 15 April 2015, Thirty Pounds of Bone (Johny Lamb) and Philip Reeder went to sea aboard the Girl Emily, a 1974 commercial line fishing boat sailing out of Custom House Quay in Falmouth, Cornwall.

Faced with an unlikely and challenging studio environment on deck, Thirty Pounds of Bone performed nine new arrangements of traditional fishing/maritime songs, as the skipper and his mate went about their business of fishing.

These recordings comprise the forthcoming album, Still Every Year They Went. For a sneak peak you can hear a track, Farewell to Grog, as aired on BBC Radio 3's Late Junction this week at 34 minutes. Do have a listen.

Despite the inherently risible endeavour, vocal performances accompanied by guitar, shruti-box and two Monotribe synthesizers were captured by a variety of microphones alongside guest performances by bow-waves, seagulls, coastguard helicopters and various sea creatures. The sound of the boat, her engines, her wake, the creaks of her hull and her propeller were a fundamental challenge but also provided a rich backdrop for the album.

The songs from or about the sea, and its associated practices, were taken back to the water—set amidst the environment of their origins. An unlikely collaboration emerges between Thirty Pounds of Bone’s dredger-paced lo-fi, and the phonographic studio methods employed by Reeder. The result is an album of material that speaks to older traditions, made relevant by a methodology that seeks new ways to render traditional song.

There's no release date for the finished album yet as it's still in the final stages of knob-twiddling but to whet the appetite, Johny and Philip have unveiled this beautiful trailer. Enjoy.

Merry Crimbo // Free Armellodie Records Sampler!

Well here we are at the close of another year, and as ever it feels like it’s whizzed by super-quick.

2011 has been a braw year for Armellodie, we partied hard from the off with our 6 month residential Barmellodie in Glasgow, witnessing live performances by every act on the roster as well as a string of uber-quality guests.

We released a handful of crackin’ records - even if we do say so ourselves - with new long-players from Le Reno Amps, Something Beginning With L, The Douglas Firs and The Hazey Janes making us immensely proud.

Next year is already shaping up nicely in the camp with the delivery of Chris Devotion & The Expectations debut album out at the end of January and the new album by our latest signing, Conor Mason set to hit the shelves mid-March.

2012 will also mark five years since we stuck out our first 7” and with several of our artists – Cuddly Shark, The Douglas Firs, Thirty Pounds Of Bone – poised to return with follow-up records this year it very much feels like the label has reached a new stage of it’s infancy.

So with that in mind and with the season of goodwill upon us we’ve compiled our first ever label sampler featuring a track from each of Armellodie’s troops, you can download it for free here, think of it as a gift that just keeps on giving.

Thank you for your support, it keeps our little legs peddling.
