Our very own Scott Maple popped into the Pulse 98.4 studios this week as a guest of Alan Clarke's excellent Sounds Of The Insomniac show. Armed with a handful of Armellodie-hits (Armellodits?) and plenty of chit-chat you can listen to the show here on Mixcloud.
We're delighted to announce that Benthic Lines by Dan Lyth and the Euphrates is officially released today.
Over the last few days there are have been a string of glowing reviews from the likes of the Sunday Herald ("it's impossible not to be blown away by songwriting that is musically precise and emotionally expansive"), the Daily Record ("A spell-binding album that you will struggle to leave"), Uncut (7/10) and the Scottish Daily Express (4 stars). There's also been a bit of airplay with BBC 6 Music and BBC Radio Scotland playing some tracks.
To provide some extra detail about the album and some of the recording sessions Dan has put together a little website - benthiclines.com. Take a peek when you get the chance, it's pretty fascinating.
A sound designer by day, Lyth began work on Benthic Lines some five years ago, his intention to record an album entirely outdoors. On rooftops and rowing boats, in forests and high streets, mountains and quarries, ruined churches and beaches, car parks and peat bogs. Anywhere really, as long as it was outside.
Having first had the idea while on a trip to Sierra Leone, Lyth quickly realised that it's one thing to daydream of such a plan whilst in the tropics and quite another to actually attempt it back at home in Scotland.
“I think some part of me took perverse pleasure in the thought of having to undergo some real physical exertion to make this record. I have also always been drawn to creative work that has taken a considerable amount of effort, and recording an album outdoors whilst living in Scotland with its devious climate seemed to fit the bill.”
Designed with love by graphic artist Sarah Lyth, the album arrives in a beautifully bound 60-page book and includes photos from the array of recording locations. Cover art from celebrated New York artist Matthew Cusick and an accompanying short story, Already Here, by talented Fifer Craig Rennie complete the desirable artefact that is Benthic Lines. So what has Lyth got to say for himself now that his affair with the great outdoors is almost over.
“After travelling, listening, recording and being constantly surprised over the course of four years and across four continents, what will really stay with me is not only all the wonderful sounds we heard (during the recording of Benthic Lines) but also the many inquisitive, open-minded and generous people we met along the way. But it wasn’t all romantic. It’s quite hard work transporting a drum kit to a remote derelict church or dragging a piano out of a small flat. There were broken mic stands, bleeding fingers and failing batteries. And there was rain, a lot of rain.”
If you'd like a copy of the album we'd recommend ordering direct from ourselves but you can pop into any good record shop and ask for it if they don't have it on the shelves already. If you live in Scotland we'd recommend Love Music in Glasgow and Avalanche in Edinburgh (now based in Cabaret Voltaire we believe). Of course the album is also available from the likes of iTunes, Amazon and various streaming services.
Finally, to celebrate the release Dan and his band will be playing two very special shows in Central Scotland. Glasgow (The Glad Cafe) on 31st May and Edinburgh (Voodoo Rooms) on the 15th June so do pop along if you're about.

There's been a flutter of activity in camp Hazey Janes since the band re-emerged in March this year with their stormin' single, 'The Fathom Line'. Greeted by five-star reviews and a string of plays on the wireless, it's safe to say the excitement is buzzing here at Armellodie Towers for the release of the new album, Language of Faint Theory, on Monday 2nd June.
Mmm mmm mmm look at that gorgeous vinyl. Speaking of which, Matthew from the band has written a really great piece about growing up listening to music on vinyl over at The Vinyl District, and it's well worth a read.

Today we're pleased to announce that the second single from the album will be 'If Ever There Is Gladness' to be released on the 25th May, free of charge! As you may know we here at Armellodie released a live album by the mighty Super Adventure Club to coincide with Record Store Day 2014.
Released on CD in a luxurious 6-panel gatefold digipack we manufactured just 100 copies of Built-In Redundancy and it was on sale exclusively at two shops in Central Scotland, Love Music Glasgow, and Avalanche, Edinburgh.
However we recently received this letter to ArmHQ.
“Dear Armellodie, I love Super Adventure Club more than life itself. However Central Scotland may as well be outer-space to me. I can’t possibly visit Love Music to purchase a copy. I am crying. Crying I tell you. Yours Sincerely, A. Fan”
To which Armellodie replied;
“Don’t worry A. Fan, we realise that due to the extremely exclusive (in all terms) nature of this particular release, it would quite simply be wrong if you, yes YOU, could not have the opportunity to own this artefact. A memento that can be passed down through future generations of your family, and one day be sold for a vast profit on Flog-It by your financially destitute great, great grandson.”

Yesterday - and still raging on today - the band posted this hotly debated update via their Facebook on their way to Bristol.
On route to Bristol. Is Jason:
A, drinking coffee to stay awake while driving?
B, drinking Glen Moray out of a Costa cup... And not driving?
Well I had a short but insightful conversation with Jason himself just after 3am this morning to get to the bottom of it, and although I never got a straight answer, I think the bookies odds would be suspended at this stage.
3:20am Jason - Aye, turns out Bristol is a boozy town! Sharing a bed with Col. Sexy!
3:22am Al Nero - Steamy
3:23am Jason - Someone is grumpy. Guess which one?
3:24am Al Nero - Hahaha, HI COLIN! You pair of chumps cuddle up now.
3:27am Jason - He says "argh, l don't feel well". So rude... Ha! He's off to spew! Maybe [insert substance] before bed ain't a good idea? Who would o' thunk it.
With this kind of intense Rock'n'Roll carnage before the band have even played one show, who knows what to expect over the next three days. If you want to be part of the circus then head along to the Stag & Hound in Bristol tonight (26/04), Blind Tiger in Brighton tomorrow (27/04) and finally The Windmill in Brixton the night after that (28/04). All gigs are pay on the door, ticket schmicket. Rock along!
So Appletop are safely back home in France after their whirlwind tour of the United Kingdom. Big thanks to everyone who came out to any of the shows. Much merriment was had.
